THE ISLAMIC STATE
The Islamic State is a Sunni Salafist jihadist group of global reach. While its base of operations is in eastern Syria and western and northern Iraq, it has supporters and fighters from North America, Europe, Russia, Africa, Asia, the Pacific Rim and Australia. In its self-proclaimed status as a caliphate, it claims religious authority over all Muslims across the world and aspires to bring all of the Muslim-inhabited regions of the world under its political control, beginning with Iraq, Syria and other territory in the Levant region, which includes Jordan, Israel, Lebanon, Cyprus, and part of southern Turkey. But it also has specifically claimed that it seeks to reconquer parts of Europe, including all of Spain and Portugal, parts of France, Italy and Austria, and all of the Balkans and Greece.
ISIS has been designated as a terrorist organization by the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, and has been described by the United Nations and Western and Middle Eastern media as a terrorist group. The United Nations has accused the Islamic State of committing "mass atrocities" and war crimes, and Amnesty International has accused it of ethnic cleansing against minorities in northern Iraq.

Nonie Darwish lived for thirty years in a majority Muslim nation. Everything about her life―family, sexuality, hygiene, business, banking, contracts, economics, politics, social issues, everything―was dictated by the Islamic law code known as Sharia. But Sharia isn't staying in majority Muslim nations. Darwish now lives in the West and brings a warning; the goal of radical Islam is to bring Sharia law to your country. If that happens, the fabric of Western law and liberty will be ripped in two. Nonie Darwish lectures across the United States and has appeared on radio and television programs including CNN, Headline News, Fox, MSNBC, Al-Arabiya, National Public Radio and Israeli TV. Darwish has been published in the London Telegraph, Jerusalem Post, and New York Daily News. She is a frequent lecturer on college campuses including Harvard, Brown, Stanford, UCLA, University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown, Boston University, and the University of Southern California. |
Darwish presents a brief history of the cycle of revolution and dictatorship that has plagued Islamic nations of the Middle East since the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1923. She finds a common thread among all of these regimes, whether military, monarchist, or ideology driven. They have all been Islamic states in which sharia, the divine law of Islam, supersedes all others, forbidding freedom of speech and religion, as well as gender equality. Under sharia law, any ruler who refuses to conduct jihad and advocates peace with non-Muslim nations can be removed from office. "In The Devil We Don't Know, Nonie Darwish shows us that there are no accidents in Islam; events do not 'just happen.' Instead, Islamic culture is driven by a doctrine that is much more than a religion. She covers the so-called 'Arab Spring' as well as the effects of Islam on personal psychology, community, and gender issues. Last, but not least, we see how Western naiveté is endangering us. All of this ground is covered in a well-written style that will appeal to all readers." —Bill Warner, Director, Center for the Study of Political Islam |
